BeCoCo International Reports:

"It's STILL in OUR HANDS: Commemorating Mandela Day in Los Angeles"

With the theme as, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” Beloved Community Coalition (BECOCO) Co-Founder, Rev. Kelvin Sauls, joined comminity partners in Los Angeles to honor Madiba’s Birthday by coordinating and facilitating a community upliftment event in south Los Angeles to Commemorate Mandela Day. Praise Sanctuary Church in South Los Angeles, a Community Hub for Hope in the West Athens corridor collaborated with students from the Office of International Affairs at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and the Staff of the South African Consulate in Los Angeles to join forces in serving various food items to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity!! The message of our collaboration was to embody and extend the leagacy of Madiba.

Nelson Mandela’s statement, “No one should go hungry,” is not merely a call for food, but a declaration rooted in his belief that overcoming poverty is a matter of justice and a fundamental human right, not charity. He emphasized that poverty, like apartheid, is a man-made condition that can be eradicated through collective action” Whether in south Los Angeles or South Africa, we are united in our commitment “combat poverty and inequity,”

Special thanks to Pastor Sonja Paey of Praise Sanctuary Church, Dr. Lejeune Lockett, Director of the Office of International Affiars at CDU, and Mrs. Venita Smit Interim Consul-In-Charge of the South African Consulate in Los Angeles.

As a Community Hub of Hope, Praise Sanctuary Church collaborate with several grocery stores and the Los Angeles Food in hosting food distributions twice a week. The congregation’s commitment is to practice their Praise loud and proud in their Sanctuary called Community! We believe “It’s STILL in OUR hands Now!!
