Celebrating the newly appointed Vice Chancellor and Principal Prof. Debra Meyer

Join Beloved Community Coalition ((BeCoCo) in celebrating the New Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Debra Meyer as she starts her tenure at Sol Plaaitjie University.

Located in Kimberly, Northern Cape, South Africa, Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is a newer public university established in 2014. The university focus on regional needs in fields like ICT, mining, education, and data science, while offering strong student support and aiming to transform Kimberley into a university town.

In her welcome address to the Sol Plaatje University community, she said:
“As your new Vice-Chancellor and Principal, my pledge is to lead with integrity, openness, and a collaborative spirit. Together, we will navigate the challenges ahead and celebrate the victories – large and small – that will define our progress. If you have the best interest of SPU at heart, then you are in the right place to make a difference for the Northern Cape and our country as a whole. Let us make 2026 a year of discovery, achievement, and unity. Let us write a chapter that honours our past and boldly shapes our future.”

Sol Plaaitjie University is named after freedom fighter, Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje (9 October 1876 – 19 June 1932). He was a South African intellectual, journalist, linguist, politician, translator and writer. Plaatje was a founding member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which became the African National Congress (ANC). The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, which includes the city of Kimberley, is also named after him.

The university is known for its modern, environmentally conscious campus and programs addressing societal challenges using technology, with a goal to serve the Northern Cape and attract national students.

Prayers-Up for good health and vitality, vision and good success, and great impact as you continue to touch lives forever, Masekind!!
